Predictions and Power Rankings Week 6

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 6

Predictions

It’s that time of the week where I get to pull out my crystal ball and see who this week’s winners will be. I knew last week that by picking against at least one team it was going to come back and bite me in the ass and it did. Hopefully it doesn’t happen too much, but with everyone hating on me picking against them then who knows what might happen (ed’s note: Again, this is not why people hate on you, Kev). Now let’s get to my picks this week.

Division 1 (0-1 LW, 8-4 Overall)

Red Raiders vs Holy Trollers NA

You can jump to whatever conclusions you want, but I will never pick my teams game.

Red Raiders vs Henchmen

Both teams are a little disorganized and it was a real close toss up, but I went with Red Raiders as they need it more to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Les Gros Coqs vs Outlaws

I wanted to go with Outlaws, but I would much rather see a tie for the division lead. I also have to believe that Gros Coqs have figured Steve and the Outlaws out and at least this season have their number.

Division 2 (3-3 LW, 23-13 Overall)

Nice TDs vs Centurions

I think this week they stop the slide and get the win. Overall, they are a better team. The defense will need to step up and shut Andrew down in order to win.

Centurions vs Deep Threats

They are a better team at every position and will only need to stop Svetna in order to win. This will be a lop-sided victory for them.

Underdogs vs Old School

I think either team could win this one, but I have to lean towards Old School based on chemistry, but it will be a really close one.

Nice TDs vs Honor Game

Both teams are going to be tired as most of them will be playing 1 or 2 games before this. I think Honor game is the better team overall and I want to lean towards them, but I figure that there is a chance they self-implode and that will cost them the game.

Joey’s Haters vs Les Petits Phoques

This is a matchup that we might see in the finals. Both teams are super talented and it was a hard pick, but I went with the Haters to win only because of the stipulations that Petits Phoques have to play with.

D#Nasty vs Bitter Boys

This one will be won by who wants it more. Both teams are fighting for a playoff spot. I just feel that D#Nasty will find a way to get it done this week.

Les Boys 2.0 vs OG Panthers

OG Panthers should win this one easily based on the rosters. This will depend on how Charles plays. Les Boys 2.0 have a few good players and might be able to pull off the upset if they play the way they can.

Bitter Boys vs Les Boys 2.0

Bitter Boys will win and it won’t be close. I think the addition of Kevin to Bitter Boys was huge and he will have a big impact in this game.

Division 3 (2-1 LW, 13-6 Overall)

Ninja Turtles vs Raccoons

I can’t see how they lose this game. They have the better roster at every position and with the Pilon brothers this would be a huge upset if they lost.

Panaches vs Sriracha All Star

In the rematch from last week I still having going to Panaches. Last week Sriracha All Stars were lucky and got a huge break with Panaches losing their QBs.

Iron Wolves vs Mustard Tigers

This will be the best game in the division. Both teams are very similar with what they do. I just think that Mustard Tigers have a slight edge and will pull out the victory by a close margin.

Division 4 (2-2 LW, 14-8 Overall)

Citadins vs Airborne

This was an easy pick. After last week’s loss, Citadins is going to come out on fire and win hands down and by a lot.

Sofa King Good vs Kill Bills

Sofa King Good is the better team and it’s not even close. The biggest issue I have with Kill Bills is you never know who is going to show up and play.

Thunder Buddies vs Flamboyant Flamingos

It might seem like an easy pick, but Flamboyant Flamingos have gotten better each week and they also have a bunch of decent athletes. I see this one being a close game, but Thunder Buddies will pull it off even if they need to get a sub to help (lol).

Les Beautes vs Sofa King Good

Sofa king Good is the better team from top to bottom. What really hurts Les Beautes chances is that their QB most likely won’t be there and that would mean Brian will be throwing and that takes away their best playmaker on the outside.

Power Rankings

We only have a few weeks left in the season and things are starting to play themselves out. These might be my rankings, but that doesn’t really mean bupkis once playoffs come around. How many times have you seen the top teams lose in sports before? Here are my rankings for this week.

Division 1

#1) Gros Coqs

#2) Outlaws

#3) Holy Trollers

Division 2

#1) Joey’s Haters

#2) Petits Phoques

#3) Nice TDs

Division 3

#1) Ninja Turtles

#2) Iron Wolves

#3) Mustard Tigers

Division 4

#1) Citadins

#2) Sofa King Good

#3) Airborne

Some teams and players might feel like I’m disrespecting them. I guess it sucks for them, but they have two choices: play better and get some wins or reach out to me and explain why or how I got it wrong. If you take the second option and come talk to me, you better have points and facts to back up your argument and then at the end of all that I will think about it, but the chances of me changing are slim to none. If your team is 1-7 and you just won your first game and ask why you’re not ranked, remember you are 1-7.

Word from the Mouth: Getting Drafted! edition

Word from the Mouth: Getting Drafted! edition

We made it through another week and it was a good one with a bunch of exciting games. This week we had two teams get their first win of the season and I just wonder how much partying took place afterwards.

We are getting close to the fall season and this year we want to try something a little different. Every season in the fall our division 1 loses a few teams and it just isn’t interesting to play since it always comes down to the same teams. This year we have a few ideas to try and fix this and here are a few options we have come up with.

Option 1 is that we split up a few of the better teams by taking a player or two off the roster and making a new team as well as bumping up a few of the better division 2 teams.

Option 2 would be to do a draft where anyone would be able to enter into and then captains which would most likely be the QBs would get to pick their players in a snake order. To get players interested in join a draft the season winner would win a cash prize. We would love to hear what you guys all think and if you want in on the draft let us know and we can sign you up and give you the details.

Week 6 Recap - Division 1

Outlaws vs Gros Coqs (20-33)

It looks as if the Outlaws have hit a snag and this was a huge loss for them as now they will no longer have the tie breaker over Gros Coqs should it finish up in a tie. Gros Coqs started out fast getting to a 13-point half time lead. Anyone that knows Steve knows that coming back from a big deficit is not what he is great at, when you normally play ball control and work down the field it makes it very tough. I spoke to Dom after the game and he said that this year they have figured out how to not get beat by Smuda (ed’s note: I’m sure the rest of the league would love to know this information!). Moving forward, Gros Coqs have to be the team to beat if you want to win the title.

Red Raiders vs Holy Trollers (19-49)

This game was very ugly. Trollers started great and showed that they could be a dominating team when their roster shows up. Mike had a bad game and it might not have been completely his fault, he missed throws either high on a few passes thrown out of bounds, but a few times you could tell wrong routes were ran. Red Raiders have a very talented roster that doesn’t play as a team. For the Trollers, I feel Max played his best game of the year and it wasn’t even close. You have to know that when the game starts on a 45-yard bomb that it isn’t going to be your day, then the exclamation point just to prove it on your first drive you throw a pick 6. It was all over after that.

Henchmen vs Holy Trolllers (32-44)

I was looking forward to this game, I wanted to see Henchmen’s new QB in person. Then we get ready to start the game and Henchmen are missing a few players had need to grab a few last minute subs. This wasn’t what anyone wants, even with players missing it was a close game. The Trollers offense kept rolling from their first game, but the defense came out flat. We all know what Kris was going to do; roll one way and throw it back across his body so everyone needed to stay in their zones. Knowing all that, Kris was still able to move the ball and keep it close. AJ was unstoppable in this game no matter who they put on him he was gone and going in for 6. The play of the game was made by Max. Kris floods my zone and on the play I dropped back a little deeper and the ball just floats over my out reached finger tips and all I know is that Haney is there, going to make the catch and I know Ben is going to give me an ear full. Then Max saves my ass and the game when he jumps in front of Haney and takes the ball back for 6 for what was the icing on the cake and ending any hope of Henchmen winning the game.

Top Performances of the Week

Last week I had a bunch of players to pick from and the same goes for this week. We had a few teams play twice, so if you did play twice, but didn’t kill it in one game and just had average numbers in both, don’t be looking too hard for your name because the likelihood of you making are slim.

Division 1

#1- AJ Gomes (2games) 8 catches for 134 yards, 5 TDs,1 1point convert, 1 2point convert, 4 tackles and a pick on defense.

#2- Dominic Lefort 18 of 28 for 219 yards, 4 TDs, 1 pick thrown, 1 1point convert, 1 2point convert, 7 runs for 26 yards and 1 TD.

#3- Max Rosenfeld (2games) 37of 52 for 425 Yards, 10 TDs, 5 1point converts, 1 2point convert, 7 runs for 27 yards and 1 pick 6 on defense

Division 2

#1- Kevin Bourbonnais 5 catches for 76 yards, 4 TDs and 4 picks on defense.

#2- Shawn Haney 7 catches for 94 yards, 3TDs, 1 1point convert, 1 2point convert, 4 tackles and 1 pick on defense.

#3- Dominic Lefort 18 of 30 for 195 yards, 5 TDs, 2 1point convert, 7 runs for 65 yards.

Division 3

#1- Mathieu Fillipe 2 catches for 63 yards, 2 TDs and 2 picks on defense.

#2- Thomas Znoj 7 catches for 68 yards, 1 TD, 1 1point convert and 2 tackles on defense.

#3- Stuart Lambon 1 catch 45 yards, 1 TD, 4 tackles and 1 pick 6 on defense.

Division 4

#1- Brian Tinning 6 catches for 103 yards, 2 TDs, 1 1point convert, 1 of 2 passing for 37 yards, 1 TD, 1 2point convert and a pick on defense.

#2- Sam Laird 22 of 29 for 172 yards, 3 TDs, 2 1point converts and 3 tackles on defense.

#3- Flamboyant Flamingos defense, 2 sacks, 3 picks and 2 pick 6s. All that to help get their first win ever.

That is who made it this week. Good luck to everyone next week and keep playing hard and you could be here next week.

Final Thoughts

Only a few weeks left in the season before we reach the playoffs. It should be an exciting last few weeks with so many teams on the bubble. A few teams are locked in, but seeding will play a big factor as to who will win it all. That will be the case for at least the top two divisions. If I had to pick the winners right now, I’d have to go Gros Coqs division 1, Joey’s Haters division 2, Ninja Turtles division 3, and Citadins Division 4, but from now to the finals a lot can happen and that is why we play the game. I know that in other leagues, teams stop showing up or playing hard once they are eliminated, but here in the MFL we want you to play your asses off and be the spoiler. Let’s go out have fun and be safe. It’s only a game we are playing and we all have things to do outside of football.

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 5

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 5

Predictions

I feel that this section is becoming easier and easier as I get to know the teams a little bit better and it should. I’m still looking for that perfect week across all the divisions. I’ve been close a few times, but close won’t cut it. Either I have to get a tad better or you guys need to start falling in line. I might have to pull a Tanya Harding on you or one of your teammates to makes this happen. To make it easy for you and less painful just take the L with class and dignity and no one gets hurt.

Division 1 (2-1 LW, 8-3 Overall)

Outlaws vs Gros Coqs

This is a tough game to pick since last time Gros Coqs won and the way they have been playing it’s tough to pick against them. I just think that this time Outlaws pull it off to get revenge. Don’t worry, we get the trilogy game next week so that will decide who is the best team.

Holy Trollers vs Red Raiders NA

Don’t pick my team games

Henchmen vs Holy Trollers NA

Like above I don’t pick my team games.

Division 2 (2-4 LW, 20-10 Overall)

Old School vs Nice TDs

They are the better team and should be able to win this one. After the way Old school lost last week I can’t pick them to win.

Petits Phoques vs D#Nasty

I am picking D#Nasty to win and this is my upset pick of the week. D#Nasty has been playing well these last few weeks and I see them keeping it up this week.

Honor Game vs Bitter Boys

Honor Game is a better team that is younger, faster, and more athletic in every way. There is no doubt in my mind that with all the experience they won’t figure out a way to win especially with what could be the season on the line or at least a shot at the playoffs (ed’s note: that’s what having the season on the line means).

Centurions vs Joey’s Haters

I’m taking Centurions. They have a solid defense that can stop almost anyone. I have to assume their QB is back plus the kicker is that half of the Haters are going to be worn out by this game.

Deep Threats vs Les Boys 2.0

Deep Threats will win because of chemistry and the fact that Svetna is going to be the best player on the field.

Les Boys 2.0 vs Underdogs

Last week I picked Underdogs and they couldn’t get it done. After seeing a few games from Les Boys 2.0, I definitely see underdogs walking away with the W. Both teams are a little all over the place, but Underdogs have a QB in Leon that knows what he is doing and what it will take to win.

Underdogs vs OG Panthers

I have to go with the team with the better roster. I also think that after the Underdogs get their first win, they will be looking to pull off another win but won’t have the energy to do so.

Division 3 (2-1 LW, 11-5 Overall)

Iron Wolves vs Ninja Turtles

Ninja Turtles are the better team, player for player. They will also be looking to avenge that week 1 loss and the only blemish on their record.

Panaches vs Sriracha All Stars

I think this is the week that they pull it together and get a win. They will need their entire roster to get it done, but they will. I also feel that this is going to be a defensive game as both teams with struggle to move the ball consistently.

Raccoons vs Mustard Tigers

Both teams wear, blue but the one with the tiger will win. I just see them as a more complete team that will find a way to pull it out. Both defenses are tough to score against it will be decided by which QB plays better.

Division 4 (2-2 LW, 12-6 Overall)

Citadins vs Sofa King Good

This one won’t be close and Citadins are going to be asking for a name change after this one for their opponent to Sofa King Bad. So now that I picked against them, they have no excuse to be upset with themselves when they lose.

Kill Bills vs Flamboyant Flamingos

I wanted to pick Flamboyant Flamingos to win this week but I just can’t. I hope that Dimitri takes what I sent him and sent it to the team, because it will help and give them a chance to win. Yann will find it easy to pick the defense apart and it will make him look like a star.

Thunder Buddies vs Airborne

Thunder Buddies are the better team and should be able to win, but it will come down to who is more organized on defense and who wants it more. It will be a tight game that will be decide by who has the ball last.

Kill Bills vs Les Beautes

I just think that with Simon throwing it gives them a better chance at winning and lets Brian free to make plays.

That’s it for this week’s picks. I hope you like how I made my picks, if not guess we will have to wait until Saturday night to see who was right.

Power Rankings

The power ranking have always stirred up a little bit of conversation amongst the players and the teams. I mean you have teams that have 1 win and they feel that they are the best team out there, but that is their opinion and really mine is the only one that matters. My rankings are like this after 5 weeks.

Division 1

#1) Outlaws

#2) Gros Coqs

#3) Holy Trollers

Division 2

#1) Nice TDs

#2) Petit Phoques

#3) Joey’s Haters

Division 3

#1) Ninja Turtles

#2) Iron Wolves

#3) Mustard Tigers

Division 4

#1) Citadins

#2) Airborne

#3) Sofa King Good

Only two changes were made to my list this week and they weren’t really big changes or anything that no one saw coming. This upcoming week with the matchups we have there is a chance for a huge shake up on my list. Guess we have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Word from the Mouth: I'm a Joey's Lover! edition

Word from the Mouth: I'm a Joey's Lover! edition

Last week was a real hot one again. When are we going to finally get some nice weather that isn’t 35 plus degrees with no breeze? Anyone who saw me Saturday knew I was dying, I want to thank everyone that took over my games at the end of the day. I was just surprised that I was able to make it home without having to stop, but what was more surprising was I was able to ref on Sunday. It was much nicer even with the rain to start the day. Baseball started a few weeks ago, basketball just began and same goes for hockey, will we end up with a football season? My bet would be no. There are too many players and there is way too much contact between players. But when you look at how much money the greedy owners would lose I can see them doing whatever it takes to get it done. I hope that all this Covid shit ends and soon.

Week 5 Recap - Division 1

Gros Coqs vs Holy Trollers (24-21)

This was a tough and somewhat exciting game (ed’s note: Way to hype it up!). Both teams were missing players and that made a difference. I had a few guys that were there to sub for the Trollers, but got stuck in traffic and were late. It sucked except for the fact that a new player was there to see what the MFL is all about and we took him for the game to fill out our roster to six players. Justin turned out to be a decent player and it looks like he will be with us the rest of the way. In this game Dom took over completing 70% of his passes, but he ran more than he normally does and we just didn’t have an answer to stop him. I would have liked him to try and run to my side, but going after the newbie was the smart thing to do. The game was close and Les Gros Coqs were able to punch it in with just under three minutes left giving the Trollers a shot at marching down and taking the lead. Trollers drove down and everyone was open (ed’s note: as they always are, of course) and Max throws it to JC and the ball goes off his hands into the hands of Charles and that was the game. I can’t wait until week 9 when we get this rematch and I hope everyone is there this time.

Outlaws vs Red Raiders (47- 27)

Steve was on all game making all the right reads. He was able to get everyone involved and that made it very difficult for Red Raiders defense to stop them. Mike was able to go into halftime with a two point lead and it seemed like there was going to be an upset in the making. Outlaws made a few adjustments at half and it really paid off for them as they were able to lockdown (ed’s note: please don’t use the L word) Red Raiders and shut them out in the second half. Sometimes you need to make adjustments at half and other times you don’t. This time not changing things hurt Red Raiders, but when you have the lead and were able to move the ball, why change it? Red Raiders have a good bunch of guys they just need to play a complete game and stay calm.

Gros Coqs vs Henchmen (34-20)

Gros Coqs jumped out to a big 28-0 lead at halftime and looked great doing it. For most of the guys it was their third game of the day, so I’m not sure how they were doing it. I don’t want to take anything away from Henchmen turning it around in the second half, but come on guys get your shit together and play as a team. It looks as if Henchmen might have a new QB in Tshitshi. After Kris stunk up the joint in the first half, Tshitshi came in and lead the team to three scoring drives and made it seem like the game was closer than what it was. The switch might actually be a good thing for Henchmen. Kris can just come out and play and be the playmaker he is and not have to worry about guys not running the proper routes, I think he’ll have more fun this way and give his team a better chance to win games. Gros Coqs are playing great and if they keep it up they might ruin Outlaws shot at a threepeat.

Henchmen vs Outlaws (21-32)

It took six games for Smuda to finally get over one hundred yards in a game. I know by now he would have done it at least two or three times in a normal season. It looks as if Steve is getting away from depending on Smuda alone. Everyone on the team this season is helping out. I want to demand that Eric have his shirt changed from Big E to just E as the man has lost a bunch of weight and looks really good out there. He also went off this week with 8 catches for 59 yards and 2 scores, but the thing that was most impressive was the speed he had as he was rumbling 23 yards in for a score. Way to go Eric, keep it up. This year maybe people will finally vote you as the top center that you have been for years. Again Tshitshi looked good against a very good defense and if he keeps it up he might be able to squeak Henchmen into the playoffs. Tshitshi should keep going at QB and that will be good for them as a team and now he just needs to get more experience and figure out who can do what on the team and who his guy is.

Top Performances of the Week

This week I had lots of players who busted their asses to try and make my list, but only a select few can make if. Have you done enough or did you get shafted and not make my list?

Division 1

#1- Stephen Harripersaud (2 Games) 49 of 64 for 534 yards, 12 TDs, 2 picks thrown, 3 1point converts and 1 2point convert

#2 Kevin Smuda (2 Games) 17 catches for 192 yards, 5 TDs, 1 1point convert, 8 tackles and 1 pick on defense.

#3- - Dominic Lefort (2 Games) 39 of 58 for 314 yards, 7 TDs, 3 picks thrown, 1 2point convert, 10 runs for 61 yards, 1 TD, 1 2point convert and 1 tackle on defense.

Division 2

#1- Joey Czikk 4 catches for 58 yards, 1 TD, 3 tackles and 2 picks on defense.

#2- JC Blais 14 of 26 for 198 yards, 4 TDs, 3 runs for 11 yards and 4 tackles on defense.

#3- Jean-Sebastien Betit 22 of 44 for 231 yards and 4 TDs.

Division 3

#1- Serge Pilon 10 catches for 90 yards, 2 TDs, 1 1point convert, 3 tackles and 1 pick 6 on defense.

#2- Jon Evans 17 of 38 for 153 yards, 2 TDs, 3 1point converts, 2 picks thrown, 2 picks on defense and 1 pick 6.

#3- Ludovic Fruit 2 catches for 18 yards, 1 TD, 4 tackles and 2 picks on defense.

Division 4

#1- Diego Campos 2 catches for 39 yards, 1 TD, 3 tackles and 1 pick on defense.

#2- Jasmine Farmer 3 catches for 77 yards and 1 TD.

#3- Theotime Brichard 2 catches for 10 yards, 7 tackles and 4 sacks on defense.

You might have felt you should have made the list, but you didn’t do enough to impress me stats wise, so try again next week or retire, whichever suits you best.

Final Thoughts

Big news in the sporting world this week. The Rock, Dwayne Johnson or as some know him the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, has just purchased the XFL from Vince McMann. Dwayne Johnson turns anything he touches into profit and a success and he will do the same here. I just hope that it stays as a sport and not a side show just to get people in the seats. I enjoyed watching spring football and I hope that it lasts. I figured I’d bring that up for the people who haven’t heard that yet.

We are just past the half way point of the season and the run for the playoffs needs to start now for some teams. This season with 4 divisions, here is the breakdown of teams making the playoffs.

Division 1 will have 4 teams in, I personally would much rather see 3 in 4 out of 5 is too many.

Division 2 will have 6 teams making the playoffs.

Division 3 and Division 4 will see 4 teams each.

That is how it will be when playoffs roll around.

Now everyone can run and look at the standings to see where they are, who they have left and what needs to happen each week for their team to get in. Al Davis said it best, “Just Win Baby”. Now with all that being said, remember we are playing a game so go out, have fun, and be safe.

Diagramming the Play: 3 Deep and Drag Under

Diagramming the Play: 3 Deep and Drag Under

Today I thought I’d show a couple of simple offensive plays to help out some of our newer teams and QBs. I’ll include a play diagram, the breakdown of the routes, and the thinking behind the play.

Very importantly to remember though, and this applies to all players, is that running your routes correctly is incredibly important! When a play is designed, most receivers are generally not likely to get the ball. In fact, on most plays you generally have a primary receiver and then a secondary and then maybe a dump off option if nothing is open.

There’s a better chance that your route is designed to draw away a defender than it is designed for you to get open! So, run your route!

3 Deep

This first play is a super simple 3 deep play. It is very effective against a 3-2 defense since you’ll have 3 wide receivers going deep against 2 safeties.

Note that those wide receivers are pushing to the sideline. Using the sideline means that even if your QB misses on the pass 50% of the time it’s going out of bounds and safe, but more importantly you are creating separation between the 3 deep receivers.

If the wide receivers don’t hug the sideline and come towards the middle of the field of play then they are bringing the safety covering them closer to the slot receiver running the post, which essentially allows one safety to cover two players.

Similarly, the post from the slot needs to run their route to the middle of the field, because if they run it too shallow or cross the field too much, they are now running towards the safety covering the wide receiver and allowing one safety to cover two players. Separation is the goal, and routes run at sideline – middle of the field – sideline is the most separation you can make!

If the defense is in 4-1 then those outside locks are going to take away the go routes and the single safety will be all over that post. However, you have a 7-10 hook from your left slot with a straight left drag from the center running underneath that.

A quick note on the “straight left” route for the center. Do not take a step forward! This allows you to run in front of the rusher if they are on that side, but it also allows your QB to read the separation between the hook from the slot and your out route. You want separation between the center and the slot and you want it fast, so do not run even 1 yard forward as this is a second longer the QB has to wait to determine if that 4-1 corner is covering the hook or the out.

In any case, against 4-1 you have a corner having to choose between that hook and the out from the center, so read that quick and hit the open receiver. That out from the center is often forgotten by defenses who are playing a little too deep!

Drag Under

This next play is all about getting one player open. So, keep in mind that 4 out of 5 receivers are almost definitely not getting the ball on this one. See what I mean by most players are there to run their route and not to get open?

The left wide receiver is running a 1-yard drag all the way across the field. Make sure this is 1 yard! Receivers often want to run deeper routes because they don’t feel like they’re getting enough yards with a short route, but again the idea is to create levels of separation between your short, medium, and long routes and if you run your route too deep there is no separation!

A very simple concept for new QBs is this: quick, short, easy, high completion percent passes and let your receivers do the work. I promise you, a 45-yard bomb for a TD and a 1-yard pass where your receiver breaks a tackle or two and runs the field for 45 yards, both go down as 45-yard TD passes in the books!

Hitting a receiver at full speed running a drag can be deadly as they have speed and separation.

Okay, here’s the play:

3 Deep

Left wide receiver runs under everyone at 1-yard. Left slot is running a 3-yard out. They should just pass over the drag from the wideout. This is a designed rub route and this play is awesome against man defenses. Just be careful to slow down the defender and not run them over!

This slot turns it up field when they get to the sideline, but I’ve run this play many times and I’ve yet to throw to that chair route, so unless you feel like you have an amazing mismatch here, don’t focus on it.

The center runs a 3-yard out to the left and sits down after a couple of yards. Again, they are taking a receiver away and impeding any defender trying to cross the field with the drag route.

The right slot is running a hook. 5-7 yards to push back the corner and create separation for the drag. Importantly, do not run this too deep! If you do then that corner may release you to the safety and then step up to the drag. This slot is essentially boxing out the corner. You want to be covered by them!

Finally, the wide right runs a 5-yard then post. Against a 4-1 defense they are taking the lock corner with them leaving the right side of the field empty for that drag route to turn it up field. If the defense is in 3-2 then you may actually want to hit this post the moment they cut over the top of the corner, so between the corner and the safety. This is literally the only read you need to make as a QB as if the corner locks the drag is going to be wide open and if not, you just read how far the corner is backed up. It’s often still worthwhile to hit the drag anyway!

Finally, that X on the image is indicating where the pass is going. You are only hitting the drag after the play has developed a little. As the QB, drop back a couple steps after the snap and remember to lead that receiver a lot as they are crossing the field at full speed and if they don’t have to slow down, they can gain a lot of yards when they turn it up field!

Okay, I hope that might be useful to some of our newer players (and maybe some of our not so new players!) and let me know if you have any questions or thoughts on these plays or if you’d like to see more!
