Word from the Mouth: 5 Picks! edition
This past weekend could have been really gummie bear’d up if people didn’t like me. When arriving on Saturday morning there were people from the city of Verdun about to set up on the football field because they had rented it for a city function. I was able to get ahold of Jon to send me the contract with the city and show that we had it rented. They showed me their contract and after a few minutes of talking and seeing what could be done I was able to convince them to use the baseball field since they didn’t need such a large area and we had more people coming. It ended up working out in the end, but would have been most uncool to set up on baseball fields. In the past we have done that, but that wouldn’t have worked this week since two of them were being used for baseball.
It was hot this week and I’m really praying for lots of rain this week. Walking 25 kms on what seems like concrete all day isn’t good. I’m old, fat, and my ankles and knees are finished. It’s calling for rain all week and Saturday as well, so you know what that means, 40 degrees, no clouds, no breeze, and 120% humidity when it’s time to play.
Week 5 Recap
Division 1
Outlaws vs Gros Coqs (14-32)
I feel bad for everyone who is now playing on D1, as Gros Coqs just got a lot better with Alexandre Bresse coming back from Spain after 3 years off. All he did this week was score 2 TDs on 4 catches totaling 96 yards as well as a 1-point convert. At times in this game both teams struggled to move the ball and their defenses stepped up huge. Smuda made a huge interception after an Outlaws TD and it could have been the difference maker in the game, but Outlaws got inside the redzone and on fourth down Svetna caught the ball on his toes, but the side of his foot came down on the line, ruled no catch. Tommy, who we all know for being a great rusher, had 3 picks on Steve with the last one being one-handed. The Outlaws offense looked off and need to figure it out if they want to get back on top again.
Division 2
Idaho Udapimp vs Spritz Gang (43-7)
There was lots of talking going on in this game and both teams were given warning, but this was never a game and wasn’t going to be one. Idaho was missing lots of players and so was Spritz Gang. JS wasn’t there so Jocelyn was QB. He can play QB in D5, but not in D2 as the players are so much better and it showed as he struggled all day long. Marvin had a decent game getting 9 catches for 59 yards and he even made a pick on defense. There were a few times he was looking for a call, but for me it didn’t seem like it needed a flag. A few of those times the defender had inside position and that’s where the ball was heading, this means the defender has the right and position on the ball. We all knew Manu Allard was a stud, but the game he had was ridiculous. Manu made 7 catches for 76 yards and 3 TDs. Where he really shined was rushing making 3 tackles, 2 being sacks and getting a pick as well. This would have been more of a game if Spritz Gang had JS. Maybe they don’t win, but it’s a lot closer.
Division 3
Phoenix vs RawSauce (21-26)
I’m not sure what I should say about this game. I personally stunk throwing 5 picks. I started the game the same way I ended it, with a pick. Before the game I didn’t think Ludovic or Gabriel were there for them and after hearing about their D4 game I was thinking it would be an easy win. They both showed up. Ludovic picked us apart for the first half and their first drive of the second half Phoenix couldn’t figure it out on defense. Once I figured out that I was able to run and make things happen the Phoenix offense started to move the ball and creep back into the game. Marc-Antoine Lamarre was all over the place on defense getting 3 picks and one of them I don’t even think he knew he picked the ball off as he put his hand up to block it and it fell right down into his other arm that was reaching for a tackle. The one play in this game that would have made the difference for Phoenix was right before half with 2 plays left, I hung a ball up to Khalil and it would have been a TD if it was a better ball. Still at the end of the game RawSauce gave us a chance to win when Ludovic went for it on fourth down and hit his receiver in the chest and it fell incomplete. Looked like Phoenix had a shot, but miscommunication between players led to wrong routes and my final pick of the game. Do I feel bad we lost? Yes of course, but I feel worse for RawSauce for the game even being this close.
Division 4
I didn’t see any games but wanted to make a few call out and points.
Villians
A few weeks back they were getting killed in D3 and now they look like the favorite to win it all in D4, oh how the tides have turned.
Cyclones
What is going on with this team. Marco doesn’t seem to be the answer at QB, Alex is by far their best receiver and has also been playing QB, then you have Nick who got them their only win while playing QB. They need to start looking to the future and pick who their QB is moving forward and ride with that player.
Drama Club
Has a new secret weapon and her name is Jeanne Lewis. The last few weeks she has really stepped up her game and become a target Simon can count on to catch the ball and make yards after.
Black Diamonds
I picked them to go 3-7 at the beginning of the year and at this point that might seem high, but also something they would be happy with see how the season has gone up until now.
Division 5
Phoenix vs Jungle Squad (40-12)
Before the season started these 2 teams scrimmaged against one another and from then to now this team has improved drastically. They have a better understanding of the game they have a few players that are good athletes, and they have this guy named Michel Gémieux who is going to be a great player in this league. He is fast, has an eye for the ball, his one downfall is that he needs to know where the sideline is because more than once he had yards to gain but stepped out. Their QB Julien Suprenant had a bit of trouble dealing with Kenny the rusher from Phoenix who happens to be tall and very fast, but also can make good hard cuts. First half of the game everything was working for Phoenix as anything we did got us yards and kept the chains moving. Kat is keeping the family name relevant in the league. She scored 1 TD and 3 1-point converts this weekend and on one of those converts she made it look easy on a very bad throw by me where she was able catch the ball and keep her feet in when I thought it was uncatchable. At half it was 34-6 so in the second half Phoenix was getting everyone involved and tried to get everyone a TD even when they were tripled covered and there was very little chance to make a play.
Big Booties vs Improbables (18-19)
We can’t tell you how important converts are until you play in a game like this. From watching this game both teams took a long time to warm up and get things going. You know the thing that was great about this game was when Lianne Deguire made her first catch ever in the league and Big Booties all cheered, now that’s what D5 is about. Alex and Gold were the main targets for Matt catching 18 of his 24 completions and getting all 3 TDs for them. What turned out to be the deciding factor in the game was after Improbables first TD the convert for JP who was wide open all alone. Late in the game needing a score it became a Josh and Max show. Josh would run to get big yards then look for Max then run again, and it did work. They scored and needed the convert to tie it up, can’t remember if they went for 1 or 2, but either way it was no good leaving 4 minutes on the clock. It was time for Big Booties to get a stop, leave some time and have a chance to win it. They couldn’t stop Matt and his offense which was just trying to chew the clock and get a few first downs to end the game. Matt was smart with the ball and only made safe throws and the game ended on Matt running for 6 yards and Big Booties being out of timeouts.
Studs & Duds
It really seems like everyone is trying to make my list with the way they have been playing these last few weeks. Here are the names of this week’s winners who are added to the list.
Studs
Division 1
- Xavier Collette was a one-man wrecking crew this week getting 26 of his teams 28 points. As well as making 5 tackles and getting 2 picks.
Division 2
- Craig O’Brien was finally able to get rid of that goose egg in the W column, throwing 7 TD and only 8 incomplete passes.
Division 3
- Alexandre Szaplipski averaged 20 yards a catch this week. Out of the 9 he caught he scored 4 times.
Division 4
- Jeanne Lewis lead the team with 3 TDs, yards with 45 and was tied for the lead with 1 pick this week. Simon might have a new favorite target moving forward.
Division 5
- Étienne Simard might not have had a great day through the Air but running for 4 TDs and over 100 yards in a game is not something you see every day.
Duds
Division 1
- Stephen Harripersaud having 2 TDs to 4 picks, those are my type numbers and we all know you can do better than that.
Division 2
- Tyler Znoj for only managing 1 sack on a QB that sits in the pocket and doesn’t really run around.
Division 3
- Kevin Kousaie for throwing 5 picks, started the game and end it with one.
Division 4
- Greg D'Alesio opened the game with a 4-yard catch and ended the game with 6 yards total and no sacks. The Greg I know is way better than that.
Division 5
- Josh Levine because when the game is on the line it was a Max and Josh show and not using the rest of the team isn’t cool, its D5.
There you have it week 5 winners and losers. I had a few difficult choses to make but, in some case, it was easy. Moving forward if you want to make my list pick it you and show me that I must have you on my list.
That’s all I have for you this week if you want more MFL news look for Terry, Willie and Jaf on Wednesday night and for Brossard look for Matt and his guest on, I want to say, Thursday night.
Thanks for reading and see you all Saturday.
